SUPERNOVA IN M101
Dr. W. F. van Altena, Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics,
University of Chicago, writes: "The following two positions (and
their mean errors) of the supernova in M101 were computed from
measurements by E. Vilkki of two plates taken with the 102-cm refractor
and the 104-cm reflector of the Yerkes Observatory by E. Vilkki and
N. Walborn. The positions, computed by E. Vilkki and W. van Altena,
are based on seven and nine reference stars from the Astrographic
Catalogue corrected to the AGK2 system. The effects of differential
color refraction for the 102-cm refractor plate, Kodak 103a-G plus a
GG 14 filter, are less than 0".01, while for the 104-cm reflector
plate, unfiltered Kodak 103a-G, they are Delta-R.A. ~ +0s.08, Delta-Decl. ~ -0'.1. The
following positions have been corrected for the effects of
differential color refraction:

          1970 UT H.A. R. A. (1950) Decl. (1950)
   102-cm Aug. 6 +5h36m 14 01 14.64 +/- 0s.06 +54 28 54.7 +/- 0".5
   104-cm Aug. 6 +4 09 14 01 14.65 +/- 0s.06 +54 28 54.8 +/- 0".5

The accuracy of the positions is limited by that of the AG positions.
The large focal ratio of the 102-cm refractor, f/19.4, has
suppressed the image of the underlying H II region, while for the
104-cm reflector at f/8 a slight trace of the H II region Is visi-
ble. The effect of the H II region on these positions should
therefore be negligible."

COMET ABE (1970g)
     B. Milet, Nice Observatory, communicates the following precise
positions. On October 28 the cometary image was very diffuse.

     1970 UT R. A. (1950) Decl.
     Oct. 23.76997 16 01 11.77 +11 38 58.1
          23.77758 16 01 11.58 +11 38 43.9
          28.76809 15 59 43.3 + 9 12 16.2
     Nov. 3.73060 15 58 18.73 + 6 37 49.8

Mr. D. Milon, Sky and Telescope, reports that J. E. Bortle,
Stormville, New York, found the comet to be unusually bright on
November 7.0, the Bobrovnikoff standard magnitude being estimated
as 6.5 +/- 0.2. On November 17.0 W. Singer, Keene, New Hampshire,
also estimated the magnitide as 6.5.
