Circular No. 2711 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Western Union: RAPID SATELLITE CAMBMASS JUPITER XIII Dr. M. Schmidt, Hale Observatories, telegraphs the following positions, obtained by C. Kowal with the 122-cm Schmidt telescope: 1974 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. mpv Oct. 17.23472 22 37 17.3 - 9 53 47 20 18.24236 22 37 07.3 - 9 54 04 The following jovicentric orbit, by K. Aksnes, Center for Astrophysics, Harvard and Smithsonian Observatories, satisfies the seven available observations (cf. IAUC 2702, 2703) within 1".5: T = 1974 July 16.88 ET Peri. = 267.96 e = 0.1053 Node = 249.18 1950.0 a = 0.0829 AU Incl. = 24.95 n = 1.2764 q = 0.074 AU P = 282.0 days Solar perturbations were ignored, and the observations may be satisfied equally well with an orbit having e = 0.3. The above orbit is similar to those of Jupiter VI, VII and X. A retrograde orbit does not give a satisfactory fit to the observations, and the least-squares heliocentric orbit - determined by the undersigned - gives e = 1.19 +/- 0.06. Further observations at the November (and if possible at the December) dark run will be essential if a reliable ephemeris is to be provided for the 1975 opposition. 1974 ET R. A. (1950) Decl.
