NEW MIRA VARIABLE IN SCUTUM
Cablegrams received from K. Osawa, Tokyo Observatory, report
the discovery, by Y. Kuwano, Hita, Oita, of a variable stellar object
at R.A. = 18h24m.1, Decl. = -14o42' (equinox 1950.0). The brightness
was given as mpv = 11.0 on June 28.68 UT and mv = 12.2 on July
14.59. The Central Bureau relayed word of this "possible nova" to
telegram subscribers.

     D. Hoffleit, Maria Mitchell Observatory, informs us that the
object appears on five plates taken between June 4 and July 3 UT,
some fading being evident during this interval. The star was
slightly fainter on a plate taken on 1920 Oct. 14, appreciably
fainter on five other plates taken during the past half century and
invisible on more than 30 more plates of the field. She suggests
that the star is a Mira variable of period about 383 days and notes
that at minimum the star is certainly fainter than magnitude 14.

UU SAGITAE
     E. L. Wright and W. Liller, Center for Astrophysics, report an
improved period of 11h09m41s.95 +/- 0s.02 based on eight minima found
from Harvard plates between 1927 and 1946 and the time of mid-eclipse
given on IAUC 2974.

JUPITER XIII (LEDA)
     E. Roemer provides the following precise positions, obtained
with the Steward Observatory's 229-cm reflector. L. M. Vaughn assisted.
Measurer: C. D. Vesely.

     1975 UT R. A. (1950) Decl.

           1.27176 1 08 06.29 + 5 04 03.5

EDITORIAL NOTICE
Contributors are advised that during the Director's absence
abroad for the next six weeks only the most urgent communications
will be reported in these Circulars. Such communications should
generally be telegraphed to the Central Bureau; the telephone
number (617) 864-5758 will not be operational during this period.
