PERIODIC COMET ENCKE
The following ephemeris, by B. G. Marsden, is that in Handb.
Br. Astron. Assoc. for 1977 with a preperihelion extension. The
comet is very badly placed for observation at this perihelion passage,
the maximum elongation from the sun being 31o in late June.
During most of August the comet will be within 15o of the sun, and
the ephemeris is provided for astronomers working in the infrared.
Magnitudes are calculated as indicated on IAUC 2547.

J. Bortle, Brooks Observatory, provides the following total
magnitude predictions, derived from observations by M. Beyer and
himself, together with those of several southern-hemisphere
observers for the postperihelion phase. Perihelion asymmetry has been
allowed for and results reduced to a standard aperture of 6.78 cm.
