Circular No. 3072 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Telex: 921428 Telephone: (617) 864-5758 PERIODIC COMET ENCKE The following ephemeris, by B. G. Marsden, is that in Handb. Br. Astron. Assoc. for 1977 with a preperihelion extension. The comet is very badly placed for observation at this perihelion passage, the maximum elongation from the sun being 31o in late June. During most of August the comet will be within 15o of the sun, and the ephemeris is provided for astronomers working in the infrared. Magnitudes are calculated as indicated on IAUC 2547. 1977 ET R. Bortle, Brooks Observatory, provides the following total magnitude predictions, derived from observations by M. Beyer and himself, together with those of several southern-hemisphere observers for the postperihelion phase. Perihelion asymmetry has been allowed for and results reduced to a standard aperture of 6.78 cm. 1977 ET m1 1977 ET m1 1977 ET m1 1977 ET m1 July 2 11.2 July 18 9.5 Sept. 2 9.8 Sept.18 11.1 6 10.7 22 9.1 6 10.1 22 11.5 10 10.3 26 8.8 10 10.4 26 11.9 14 9.9 30 8.4 14 10.8 30 12.3 COMET LOVAS (1977c) Further precise positions have been reported as follows: 1977 UT R.
