PROBABLE OPTICAL COUNTERPART FOR LMC X-4
     C. Chevalier, Observatoire de Meudon; and S. A. Ilovaisky, Centre
d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay, write that photometric and
spectroscopic observations of the Sanduleak-Philip candidate (IAUC 3023
3039) for LMC X-4 obtained at the European Southern Observatory in
February and March show this star to be a close binary with period
1.410 +/- 0.003 days and a primary minimum on Mar. 13.380 +/- 0.005 UT.
The light curve, of amplitude 0.15 magnitude in B, is double humped
and one maximum is variable in intensity. The spectrum shows H, He
I and He II in absorption. The spectral type is about O8, and the
mean radial velocity confirms LMC membership. The He II 4686 A line
is also present in emission and exhibits periodic radial-velocity
variation (semiamplitude ~ 500 km/s) in phase with the light curve
and such that maximum recession velocity occurs at the variable
maximum in the light curve. The underlying 4686 A absorption line
shows approximately constant radial velocity to within +/- 50 km/s.
