COMET TRITTON (1978d)
Keith Tritton, U.K. Schmidt Telescope Unit, reports the discovery
of a comet on a deep IIIa-J exposure with the 122-cm Schmidt
telescope. The following positions are available:

     1978 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. Mag. Observer
     Feb. 11.65764 10 46 40 - 0 44.2 ~20 Tritton
          13.67292 10 44 39 - 0 44.9 "
          15.28128 10 43.0 - 0 45 ~19 Shao

K. Tritton (Coonabarabran). Fuzzy nucleus and tail visible.
C.-Y. Shao (Harvard Obs.). Very well condensed, tail 10"-15" long.

COMET BRADFIELD (1978c)
     D. Herald, Kambah, near Canberra, provides precise positions:

     1978 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. m1
     Feb. 6.70833 18 34 19.14 -48 42 10.3 8.0
           6.72653 18 34 26.98 -48 41 25.4
           6.75986 18 34 40.38 -48 40 07.7
           7.71493 18 41 07.06 -48 01 11.1
           8.75729 18 48 05.83 -47 16 22.2

Herald's orbital elements on IAUC 3172 are from these observations.

Total visual magnitude estimates: Feb. 5.75 UT, 7-7.5 (T. B.
Tregaskis, Mount Eliza, Victoria, 10 x 50 binoculars); 6.62, 7.5
(D. Seargent, The Entrance, New South Wales, 15 x 80 binoculars).

EDITORIAL NOTICE
The record-breaking snowstorm of Feb. 6-7 in eastern Massachusetts
caused a delay in mailing IAUC 3170 and a ban on all but emergency
traffic in Cambridge until Feb. 14. Special arrangements
were made to remove the preaddressed cards for IAUC 3171-3172 to
Lexington, where the ban ended on Feb. 10, and those Circulars were
printed and mailed there. Telegraphic communication was also
disrupted for almost 72 hours. Much of the information about comet
1978c was therefore obtained by telephone and then telephoned to
key individuals for dissemination in the southern hemisphere.

1978 February 17 (3175) Brian G. Marsden
