UW CENTAURI
F. M. Bateson, Variable Star Section, Royal Astronomical Society
of New Zealand, writes that O. R. Hull has reported that the R
CrB variable UW Cen is fading. Selected visual magnitude estimates
by Hull are: Feb. 11.49 UT, 9.5; 15.65, 9.6; 18.43, 9.9; 24.37,
10.0; 26.34, 10.2; 28.37, 10.5. Photoelectric observations at the
Auckland Observatory yield: Feb. 24.519 UT, V = 10.02, B-V = +0.76,
U-B = +0.18; Mar. 1.417, 10.52, +0.70, +0.11.
NOVA SERPENTIS 1978
P. Bouchet and G. Adam, European Southern Observatory, communicate
the following photoelectric observations (accuracy 0.01 magnitude),
the first ones replacing those on IAUC 3195: Mar. 11.380 UT,
V = 9.00, B-V = +0.55, U-B = -0.40; 13.385, 9.49, +0.52, -0.50;
14.385, 9.68, +0.52, -0.52; 15.391, 9.74, +0.49, -0.53; 16.384,
9.43, +0.54, -0.54; 17.376, 9.51, +0.56, -0.52.
Visual magnitude estimates by P. Maley (Houston, Texas, and
Huntsville, Alabama): Mar. 19.46 UT, 8.6; 20.45, 9.0.
G. H. Herbig, Lick Observatory, writes that a spectrogram
(dispersion 34 A/mm) of the red region, obtained on Mar. 13.5 UT by E.
Harlan with the coude spectrograph on the 305-cm reflector (fed by
the auxiliary 61-cm reflector), showed very intense H-alpha emission
with a strong displaced absorption at ~ -1500 km/s. A similar
feature was present shortward of the broad Na I D line emission.
Bands of Fe II and [O I] dominated the rest of the emission spectrum
in the red. He I emission was not present. The interstellar
Na I lines were prominent, and the stronger diffuse interstellar
bands were also present.
PERIODIC COMET TRITTON (1978d)
The following precise positions were obtained by C.-Y. Shao
with the Harvard Observatory's 155-cm reflector:
1978 UT R. A. (1950) Decl.
Mar. 11.27627 10 20 15.86 + 0 09 23.2
14.20973 10 18 16.98 + 0 18 48.3
