Circular No. 3217 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Telex: 921428 Telephone: (617) 864-5758 CIRCINUS X-1 I. S. Glass, South African Astronomical Observatory, reports that on Mar. 29 and Apr. 3 Cir X-1 was two magnitudes fainter in the infrared (JHK) than previously observed at the same phases. HR 1099 R. S. McMillan, Marshall Space Flight Center, writes: "Optical linear polarization measurements of HR 1099 were made on Feb. 24 with a two-channel, rotating wave-plate polarimeter on the 100-cm reflector at the University of Arizona's Mount Lemmon Observatory. The ninth-magnitude companion star was included in the focal-plane diaphragm, and the data are corrected for some small sky background and instrumental polarization. Averages of observations made during 2h04m-2h32m UT are given, the error estimates being standard errors of the means of the individual observations: effective wavelength 0.76 um, polarization 0.10 +/- 0.03 percent, p.a. 77o; 0.65 um, 0.02 +/- 0.05, 65o; 0.52 um, 0.04 +/- 0.04, 138o; 0.44 um, 0.05 +/- 0.04, 127o; 0.36 um, 0.04 +/- 0.12, 176o. The data are consistent with an unpolarized source." PERIODIC COMET SHAJN-SCHALDACH The following ephemeris, by the undersigned, is from the elements in Handb. Br. Astron.
