TWO PROBABLE COMETS KOWAL
Charles T. Kowal, Hale Observatories, reports the probable
discovery of two further comets on exposures with the 1.2-m Schmidt
telescope as follows:
1979 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. m1
Comet 1 July 26.37292 21 07 28.76 -13 35 31.9 18
26.42500 21 07 27.77 -13 35 36.7
27.42083 21 07 06.94 -13 37 32.1 18
27.47292 21 07 05.89 -13 37 37.4
Comet 2 July 26.37292 21 12 23.44 -13 27 15.0 18
26.42500 21 12 21.49 -13 27 19.8
27.42083 21 11 44.29 -13 28 52.8 18
27.47292 21 11 42.15 -13 28 58.6
Comet 1 is described as diffuse, without condensation, with a tail
< 1o long; Comet 2 is only marginally diffuse.
Computations by C. M. Bardwell and B. G. Marsden, Center for
Astrophysics, suggest that both objects may be short-period comets,
although Comet 2 could well be a Hilda-type minor planet. The
following ephemerides could, of course, be considerably in error, but
they are provided here in the hope that further observations -
which are urgently needed - can be made.
