Circular No. 3404 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 SCORPIUS X-1 B. Cooke, Leicester University; L. Petro, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and J. van Paradijs, University of Amsterdam, announce a worldwide x-ray/optical study of Sco X-1. X-ray observations will be made with the Ariel-6 satellite during 1980 Apr. 15d12h-27dl2h UT. The x-ray detectors operate between 1 and 20 keV with 0.3-s time resolution. During the 1979 coordinated SAS-3 study of Sco X-1 (IAUC 3327) flares were observed that contained unresolved structure at a 1-s timescale and that were well correlated with optical flares. The goals of the present study are to resolve the rapid x-ray flares and to investigate the variation of the optical flare lag as a function of binary phase. Optical observers who can make 0.1-1.0-s time resolution photometric or 3-10-s time resolution spectroscopic observations are urged to participate in this project and, to request telescope time for the above period. For coordination of observing schedules and further information prospective participants should telephone or telex one of the organizers: Cooke, telephone U.K. 0533-554455, telex 341664 LUXRAY G; Petro, telephone U.S. 617-253-3169, telex 92-1473 MIT CAM; van Paradijs, telephone Neth. 020-5223004, telex 16460 ZELAB NL. COMET KOWAL (1979h) No further observations have been reported, but they are urgently needed.
