W. E. Green and B. G. Marsden, Center for Astrophysics, confirm the general correctness of the orbit calculated by Pingre (1771, Mem. Acad. Paris, p. 427) for comet 1770 II, in particular that Node = 111o (equinox 1950.0). Since perturbations cause the nodes to advance in a retrograde orbit, identity of 1770 II with 1979l does not seem possible (cf. IAUC 3440). The following general orbit solution by Marsden for 1979l satisfies the 14 Perth positions within 1".5; e has a formal mean error of +/- 0.0004.
