Circular No. 3729 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 NOVAE IN M31 C. Christian, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Corporation; and R. Schommer, Rutgers University, observed Nova 4 in M31 (IAUC 3725) on Sept. 27 with the 4-m telescope at Kitt Peak. They report that the nova showed strong, broad (400-nm FWHM) H-beta emission, which has a possible P-Cyg line profile, superposed on a blue continuum. The spectrum also shows weak H-gamma and H-delta emission. G. Jacoby, Kitt Peak National Observatory; R. Ciardullo, University of California at Los Angeles; and H. Ford, Space Telescope Science Institute, report finding yet another nova, Nova 5, in the same galaxy. It was not present on Sept. 12, had an H-alpha mag of 16.95 on Sept. 16 and rose to mag 15.15 by Sept. 23. The blue mag peaked at 17.5 on Sept. 20 and declined to 18.2 by Sept. 23. The positions of the nova and a nearby reference star are: R.A. (1975) Decl. Nova 5 0 41 45.81 +41 09 18.9 Ref. star 0 41 37.03 +41 10 35.5 PSR 0833-45 P. A. Hamilton, P. M. McCulloch and G. W. R. Royle, University of Tasmania, report observing an abrupt decrease in the period of the Vela pulsar PSR 0833-45 on Aug. 10.645 UT. The fractional change at that time in pulse frequency was (2.034 +/- 0.003) . 10**-6 and in the frequency derivative was 0.042 +/- 0.004. These results were derived from 635-MHz observations at Hobart during June 17- Sept. 16. As the actual jump was not observed its epoch was computed by assuming no discontinuity in phase at the time of jump. R AQUARII S. Tapia and E. R. Craine, Steward Observatory: and G. Jacoby, Kitt Peak National Observatory, write: "Blue and visual images of R Aqr, obtained on Sept. 23 and 24, reveal an 8" elongated extension at p.a. 26 that has apparently not been observed before. Approximate magnitude and colors of the central part of the extension are V = 13.5, B-V = -0.4, U-B = +2.0. Indications of a very small extension in the opposite direction suggest that some violent ejection may have taken place during the current minimum of this variable." 1982 October 1 (3729) Brian G. Marsden
