Circular No. 3759 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 SUPERNOVA IN NGC 5485 L. Rosino, Asiago Astrophysical Observatory, telexes: "A spectrogram (dispersion 120 A/mm) obtained on 1982 Dec. 27.1 UT by S. Ortolani with the grating spectrograph on the 1.82-m telescope shows that this is a type I supernova in a rather advanced state of evolution, probably then 20-30 days past maximum. Broad emission features typical of type I objects have been observed at wavelengths 402, 465.5 (outstanding), 484, 491, 496.5, 507, 514.5, 533, 568 and 594 nm. The absorption feature at 613.5 nm is barely visible in the tracings." epsilon AURIGAE G. Henson, J. Kemp and D. Kraus, Physics Department, University of Oregon at Eugene, write: "We have observed a sudden change in the polarization of epsilon Aur between 1982 Nov. 24 and Dec. 9 UT. Measurements in the V filter of normalized Stokes parameters over the interval Aug. 24-Nov. 24 averaged Q = +0.33 +/- 0.03, U = -2.3 +/- 0.05. On Dec. 8 and 9 we observed values of Q = +0.017 +/- 0.013, U = -2.404 +/- 0.110 and Q = +0.021 +/- 0.012, U = -2.353 +/- 0.014, respectively, i.e., a 10-sigma drop in the Q parameter. Our photometric observations gave V = 3.75 +/- 0.01 on Dec. 9." VY AQUARII On IBVS 2232 R. H. McNaught, Royal Greenwich Observatory, writes that chart 225 of the Papadopoulos True Visual Magnitude Star Atlas, photographed on 1973 July 31.9 UT, suggests that this recurrent nova, previously known to have had outbursts in 1907 and 1962, was then again near maximum (mv = 9.7). W. Wenzel, Sonneberg Observatory, cables that the Sonneberg Sky Patrol confirms a 1973 outburst, with further observations as follows: 1973 July 30.0 UT, mpg = 9.5; Aug. 1.0, 9.9; 6.0, 10.6.
