Circular No. 3799 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 COMET IRAS-ARAKI-ALCOCK (1983d) V. Smith, McDonald Observatory, reports that visual observations at the coude focus of the 2.7-m reflector on May 5.4 UT in 2" seeing showed no real structure but a stellar nucleus. Digicon-scanner spectra (12-nm bandwidth) showed the nucleus to be dominated by reflected sunlight: some faint C-2 (516-nm) emission was detected from a very faint extension 5" to the northeast. The following improved parabolic orbital elements have been derived by the undersigned from 15 observations Apr. 27 to May 6: Epoch 1983 May 10.0 ET T = 1983 May 21.1865 ET Peri. = 192.7842 Node = 48.3985 1950.0 q = 0.991381 AU Incl. = 73.3775 The perturbations during May 10.0-14.0 amount to Delta-T = -0.0025 day, Delta-Peri. = -0.0030 deg, Delta-Node = 0.0000 deg, Delta-Incl. = -0.0037 deg, Delta-q = +0.000006 AU, Deltae = +0.000167. The ephemeris uncertainty is estimated to be up to 5'. 1983 ET R.A.
