Circular No. 3838 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 SUPERNOVA IN NGC 5236 W. Wamsteker, European Space Agency, reports that IUE observations at Vilspa suggest that this is a Type I supernova. Monitoring for 4 hr on July 4 and for 8 hr on July 5 indicates significant changes in the range 260-300 nm, with short-term variation over 1-2 hr in the spectral features. The fine-error-sensor magnitude (520 nm) was 12.8 on July 4 and 12.4 on July 5. R LEONIS AND S140-IR A.-M. Le Squeren, Observatoire de Meudon, communicates: "R Leo had an unusual intensity variation during 1.8-m OH monitoring of 15 Mira-type variables with the Nancay radio telescope during 1980-1983. Like other Mira variables, it showed a phase lag of a few days between the intensity of OH and the lightcurve. However, the integrated OH flux of R Leo has steadily decreased from 1.5 x 10**-22 W m**-2 (1667 MHz) at the maximum of the 1980 cycle to 0.1 x 10**-22 W m**-2 at the maximum of the 1982 cycle. Observations in the infrared and other maser lines would help attempts to explain this phenomenon." L.-A. Nyman and G. Sandell, Onsala Space Observatory, report: "The 22-GHz HWO maser associated with the protostellar cluster S140-IR (Blair et al. 1978, Ap.J. 219, 896; Beichman et al. 1979, Ap.J. 232, L47) has recently had a major flare. In June we recorded an intensity of 2500 Jy at a velocity of -2.8 km/s (VLSR) with the 20-m telescope, compared to an intensity of 175 Jy in 1982 Dec. During the last year the maser has been in a quiescent phase with 2-4 lines of ~ 30 to 100 Jy, although it was much brighter (~ 500 Jy) from early 1981 until mid-1982."
