CORRIGENDUM
The transient x-ray source mentioned on IAUC 3854 and 3858 was
erroneously listed as 4U 1543-45. This should read 4U 1543-47.
SUPERNOVA IN FAINT SPIRAL GALAXY
J. Maza, Department of Astronomy, University of Chile,
reports that L. E. Gonzalez has found a supernova 4" east and 18"
south of the nucleus of a faint spiral galaxy at R.A. = 0h15m6, Decl.
= -37deg59' (equinox 1950.0). Photographic magnitude estimates from
the Cerro El Roble exposures: July 12, 18.0; Sept. 6, ~ 20.
PU VULPECULAE
A. Purgathofer and A. Schnell, Institute for Astronomy,
University of Vienna, communicate: "Low-resolution image-tube
spectrograms of PU Vul (R.A. = 20h19m0, +21deg25', equinox 1950.0) during
Sept. 4-8 show a late-F-type spectrum of luminosity class I (Sr II
408 nm relatively strong). H-alpha and H-beta are seen only in emission;
very faint emissions of O III 501 nm and O II 373 nm are also
present. Spectrograms (dispersion 125 A/mm) obtained by H. M.
Maitzen on July 26 show approximately the same spectral type but
no emissions. We also observed brightening in U by 0.004 mag/day
starting around July 5, increasing to 0.03 mag/day after Aug. 30."
R CORONAE BOREALIS
Selected visual magnitude estimates: Aug. 26.53 UT, 6.7 (K.
Hirosawa, Nagoya, Japan); 27.88, 7.0 (K. Medway, Southampton,
Eng.); 28.8, 7.2 (M. Verdenet, Bourbon-Lancy, France); 29.88, 7.3;
(J. Shanklin, Cambridge, Eng.); Sept. 1.09, 8.5 (C. Hurless, Lima,
OH); 2.07, 8.6 (G. Chaple, Townsend, MA); 4.11, 8.6 (L. Hiett,
Arlington, VA); 5.20, 9.5 (C. E. Spratt, Victoria, BC); 6.12, 9.4
(C. Scovil, Stamford, CT); 9.0, 9.5 (J. Bortle, Stormville, NY).
U AQUARII
E. Waagen, AAVSO, communicates further visual magnitude
estimates showing recovery from its recent, short, shallow minimum:
Aug. 21.1 UT, 11.9 (C. Scovil, Stamford, CT); Sept. 5.24, 11.7 (T.
Jeffrey, Three Rivers, CA).
