Giovannelli, Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale, Frascati; A. Vittone, Naples; and S. di Serego, European Space Agency, telex: "An observation made at La Silla on Apr. 10 indicates this object is a type II supernova. An image-dissector-scanner spectrum taken at the 1.5-m telescope (dispersion 114 A/mm) shows HS with a P-Cyg profile. The blue edge of the absorption corresponds to an expansion velocity of ~ 13 000 km/s. Infrared photometry at the 1-m telescope gives J = 15.4 +/- 0.4. Direct imaging of NGC 4451 with the ESA photon-counting detector at the 2.2-m telescope reveals this galaxy to be a normal Sc spiral, contrary to classifications in the RNGC (elliptical) and in the Second Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies (lenticular, LA). The supernova is located in the inner spiral arm." SUPERNOVA 1985H Conflicting reports have been received concerning the reality of the supposed supernova in NGC 3359 (IAUC 4050), but any supernova must evidently be no brighter than mag 15. COMET SHOEMAKER (1984f) A visual magnitude estimate by C. S. Morris at Table Mountain Observatory (0.61-m reflector) on Apr. 13.38 UT gave m1 = 11.0. The comet was fairly well condensed, and there was a fan tail ~ 15" long in p.a. 225. Ephemeris from the orbit on MPC 9426: 1985 ET R.A.
