Circular No. 4386 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-495-7244/7440/7444 MV LYRAE W. Gotz, Sonneberg Observatory, reports that 19 photographic plates (taken mostly by B. Fuhrmann) show that the novalike variable star MV Lyr has undergone brightening during Apr.; on Mar. 28 UT it was at mag 16.9 and on May 2 at mag 14.1. SUPERNOVAE 1987B AND 1987D A. V. Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley, reports that high-quality spectra (range 310-1000 nm, resolution 0.6- 1.6 nm) of supernovae 1987B and 1987D were obtained on May 3 and 4 UT with a CCD spectrograph on the Shane 3-m reflector at Lick Observatory. Of SN 1987D he writes: "Preliminary spectroscopic analysis indicates that this type-Ia SN (IAUC 4370, 4379) is now 15 +/- 5 days past maximum. The absorption feature at 615 nm is very prominent, as are the broad maxima at 461, 493, 530, and 855 nm." Of SN 1987B he notes: "H-alpha is now the only very strong emission line in this SN (IAUC 4321); its FWHM and FWZI are at most 1300 and 5000 km/s, respectively -- much less than usual in such young SNe. The FWZI two months ago was twice as large (IAUC 4329). There are many narrow P-Cyg profiles at visual wavelengths." SUPERNOVA 1987C IN MARKARIAN 90 Filippenko also obtained spectra (same date and instrumentation as given above) of SN 1987C (cf. IAUC 4368), showing it to be a type-II SN several months past maximum brightness. Strong P-Cyg profiles are present in the spectrum. The FWHM of the H-alpha emission is about 5000 km/s. J. W. Moody, T. Williams, B. Laubscher, and M. E. Sulkanen, Institute for Astrophysics, University of New Mexico, report the SN as being 16".8 south and 12".6 east of the galaxy's nucleus, from their CCD imaging. On Apr. 10, V = 17.55 +/- 0.05. PERIODIC COMET HALLEY (1982i) Further total visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4372): Apr. 25.23 UT, 13.5 (J. V. Scotti, Tucson, AZ, 0.41-m reflector); 26.12, 13.6 (D. W. E. Green, Oak Ridge Observatory, 0.41-m reflector); 27.83, 13.7 (R. Fleet, Harare, Zimbabwe, 0.52-m reflector). 1987 May 6 (4386) Daniel W. E. Green
