PERIODIC COMET CHURYUMOV-GERASIMENKO (1988i)
J. Gibson, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and H. Pedersen, European
Southern Observatory, report their independent recoveries of this
comet using the 1.52-m Palomar and 2.2-m La Silla telescopes,
respectively. The object is close to the prediction on MPC 11502
(ephemeris on MPC 13059). Both observers find the comet to be
essentially stellar in appearance, and Gibson estimates magnitude
about 20 with a Gunn r filter.

Y. Andrillat, Laboratoire d'Astronomie, Universite de Montpellier,
telexes: "A spectrogram (range 656-1038 nm, dispersion 26 nm/mm)
obtained on June 22.96 UT with a CCD detector at Haute Provence
Observatory shows numerous and intense TiO and VO absorption bands:
TiO at 671.4, 712.6, 759.0, 830.0, 845.2, and 886.0 nm, and VO at
740.0 and 790 nm. This last band is characteristic of an M7 star,
which is slightly different from the photoelectric classification
(M6; cf. IAUC 4616). Our spectrum is similar to that of RU Her,
which is classified an M6.5 III star (Turnshek et al. 1985, An
Atlas of Digital Spectra of Cool Stars). A spectrogram taken on
1987 Sept. 13.89 shows only the preceding TiO bands typical of an
M5 star. This spectral transition from M5 to M7 corresponds to the
faintest brightness of the star (cf. IAUC 4605)."

magnitudes: July 7.92 UT, U = 18.0; 8.92, B = 18.7.
