SUPERNOVA 1989K IN NGC 5375
C. Brewer reports the discovery by J. Mueller and herself,
on a red plate taken May 4.20 UT with the 1.2-m Oschin Schmidt
Telescope in the course of the Second Palomar Sky Survey, of
a mag 17.5 supernova in NGC 5375 (= UGC 08865 = MCG +5-33-27).
The SN is located 65" east and 10" north of the galaxy center, at
R.A. = 13h54m35s, Decl. = +29 25.0 (equinox 1950.0). Confirmation
of the SN was made by A. Dressler and J. Gunn on May 9 with the
Hale 5-m reflector (+ 4-shooter spectrograph); the spectral features
indicate that the object is a type-II supernova, about 100 days
after maximum: strong H-alpha, weak Na D, and the infrared Ca
triplet with P Cyg profiles.
