Roettger and P. D. Feldman, Johns Hopkins University; and M. F. A'Hearn, University of Maryland, report: "We obtained observations of the ultraviolet spectrum of comet Austin with the International Ultraviolet Explorer on Dec. 22.3 UT. From the observed OH emission rate, a water production rate of 1.5 x 10E29 molecules sE-1 is derived. For comparison, interpolation of IUE data on P/Halley 1986 III for the same preperihelion heliocentric distance (2.2 AU) gives a water production rate of 0.7 x 10E29 molecules sE-1. The dust-to-gas ratio appears to be slightly higher than that of P/Halley." Total visual magnitude estimates (cf. IAUC 4924): Dec. 20.58 UT, 10.8 (A. Pearce, Scarborough, W. Australia, 0.20-m reflector); 22.47, 9.6 (D. A. J. Seargent, The Entrance, N.S.W., 15x80 binoculars); 26.56, 9.6 (G. Garradd, Tamworth, N.S.W., 10x50 binoculars); 28.59, 10.1 (Pearce, 20x80 binoculars); 29.53, 9.3 (T. Lovejoy, Northcote West, Victoria, 15x80 binoculars).
