Mueller reports her discovery of a comet on 1.2-m Oschin Schmidt Telescope plates taken by C. Brewer and J. D. Mendenhall in the course of the second Palomar Sky Survey. There is a faint tail to the west. Mueller provides the following positions: 1990 UT R.A. Pasquini and J. Melnick, European Southern Observatory, La Silla, telex: "Preliminary analysis of a CCD spectrum (range 450-720 nm) of SN 1990ac obtained Sept. 26.3 UT with the New Technology Telescope (NTT) indicate a clear type-Ia supernova about one week after maximum. The redshift of the parent galaxy was not determined, but the supernova Si II features (635.5, 597.2, and 505.1 nm) appear redshifted by about 7800 km/s with respect to the sun. Assuming a typical blueshift of 11 600 km/s for type-Ia supernovae one week after maximum, this implies a redshift of z about 0.065 for the parent galaxy." SUPERNOVA 1990ab IN ANONYMOUS GALAXY A. Moneti, L. Pasquini, and J. Melnick, European Southern Observatory, report: "Preliminary analysis of a CCD spectrum (range 450-720 nm) of SN 1990ab (cf. IAUC 5096), obtained on Sept. 25.2 UT with the NTT at La Silla, shows clear absorption of Si II (635.5 nm), Na D (589.2 nm), and Fe II (553.5, 521.5, and 492.4 nm), indicating a type-Ia supernova about three weeks past maximum. The redshift of the host galaxy, determined from the Mg b (518 nm) and Na D (589.2 nm) absorption lines and from the emission lines of [N II] (655 and 658 nm) and [S II] (672 nm), is z = 0.034. No H-beta emission was detected in the host galaxy spectrum. The expansion velocities of the ejecta, derived from the difference between the rest wavelength in the galaxy's frame and the minima of the absorption features, are in the range 7500-9000 km/s." 1990 September 26 (5102) Daniel W.
