SUPERNOVA 1996bw IN NGC 664
     S. Benetti and M. Turatto, European Southern Observatory, report:
"A fully-reduced CCD spectrogram of SN 1996bw (range 370-970 nm,
resolution 1.5 nm) obtained on Dec. 7.2 UT with the 3.6-m
telescope (+ EFOSC) shows the typical spectral features of a type II
supernova about two weeks after maximum. The spectrum consists of a
broad H-alpha emission that is now developing a broad P-Cyg absorption,
and there are well-developed P-Cyg profiles of H-delta, H-gamma, H-beta
and He I 587.6 nm. Blueward of H-alpha an absorption identified with
Si II 635.5 nm is also present. A similar feature was visible in the
spectra of SNe 1990E and 1992H about 19 days after maximum (Clocchiatti
et al.) The lines are superimposed on a blue continuum (Tbb about
8600 K). The expansion velocity deduced from the minima of the
lines is about 11 000 km/s."
