Circular No. 3125 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. Cable Address: SATELLITES, NEWYORK Telex: 921428 Telephone: (617) 864-5758 SMC X-2 AND SMC X-3 F. Li, G. Jernigan and G. Clark, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, report that SAS 3 has detected two new x-ray sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud: 2S 0052-739 (SMC X-2), located at R.A. = 0h52m54s.5, Decl. = -73o56'58"; and 2S 0050-727 (SMC X-3), located at R.A. = 0h52m21s.2, Decl. = -72o42'01" (equinox 1950.0; 90-percent-confidence error radii 25"). Their average energy fluxes in the spectral range 2-10 keV during the period of observation Oct. 11-16 were 1.6 and 1.1 x 10**-10 erg cm**-2 s**-1, respectively. The corresponding luminosities at an assumed distance of 65 kpc are 8 and 6 x 10**37 erg s**-1. The sources are probably variable since they were not detected in previous observations. An immediate search for optical or radio counterparts is therefore advisable. U GEMINORUM HEAO-1 experimenters G. Garmire, P. Charles, K. Mason, S. Bowyer, G. Riegler, I. Tuohy, E. Boldt, S. Holt, R. Rothschild and P. Serlemitsos report the discovery of intense ultrasoft x-ray emission from U Gem. A flux of 10**-10 erg cm**-2 s**-1 in the 0.15-0.30-keV energy band was observed on Oct. 20.393 UT with the low-energy detectors on the HEAO-1 spacecraft; the source was not detected at energies above 0.3 keV. Observations on Oct. 19.558 UT revealed no flux down to 10**-11 erg cm**-2 s**-1. Preliminary spectral analysis yields a temperature of less than 0.04 K and a column density of less than 10**19 atoms cm**-2. The optical outburst of U Gem was monitored by J. Morgan, Prescott, Arizona. He provides the following visual magnitude estimates: Oct. 14.50 UT, 14.6; 16.40, 14.1 18.51, 12.2; 19.50, 9.0; 20.51, 9.3; 21.49, 9.3; 22.52, 9.4; 23.51, 9.4; 24.50, 9.4.
