PERIODIC COMET DANIEL (1979b)
     A. Pickup, Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, telexes that this
comet has been recovered on a plate taken by P. R. Standen with the
122-cm U.K. Schmidt telescope at Siding Spring. The following position,
measured by M. Hartley, is of the start of a trail on a 60-min
exposure:

     1979 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. m1
     Feb. 2.69097 13 12 39.93 +22 01 42.6 19

The image is well condensed, with no tail, and the comet also
appears on a confirming plate taken in inferior conditions on Feb. 7.
The comet's position was in close agreement with an ephemeris
supplied by Pickup from the predicted elements by the undersigned on
IAUC 3219. The previous record distance at which this comet has
been observed was r = 2.41 AU, A = 1.52 AU on 1951 Mar. 7 (when m2
= 19.9; L. E. Cunningham, l55-cm reflector, Mt. Wilson Observatory).

If the middle digit of the middle group of figures on your
address label is a 2, then the last four figures show the IAUC No. up
to which you have paid. If this number is 3341 or less, fewer than
ten issues remain in your subscription, and renewal is now desirable
to ensure continuity of service. The special renewal rate is
normally $10.00 for 50 issues or $20.00 for 100. Note that the
address now appears on the envelope, not on the card itself. This
new procedure should ensure that subscribers will no longer miss
occasional issues and receive duplicates of others.
