Circular No. 3432 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION Postal Address: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. TWX 710-320-6842 ASTROGRAM CAM Telephone 617-864-5758 1947 XC = 1979 XA E. Helin, California Institute of Technology, informs us that 1979 XA (cf. IAUC 3430) was discovered by Q. R. Passey and S. J. Bus on exposures with the 0.46-m Schmidt telescope at Palomar. T. Christian assisted with the observations. The following precise positions have been reported: 1979 UT R. A. (1950) Decl. Mag. R. Passey and S. J. Bus (Palomar Mountain Observatory). E. Bowell (Lowell Observatory, Anderson Mesa Station). 0.3-m photographic telescope. Measurer: M. L. Kantz. Photoelectric observations on Dec. 15.2 UT gave V = 14.5, B-V = +0.86. J. H. Bulger and C.-Y. Shao (Harvard College Observatory, Agassiz Station). 0.4-cm astrograph and 1.5-m reflector. J. G. Williams, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, suggested that 1979 XA = 1947 XC (Object Giclas; cf. IAUC 1131, MPC 242). Subsequent computations by B. G. Marsden confirmed the identity, although the number of revolutions since 1947 is uncertain. Direct calculations from the 1979 observations indicate 11.5 +/- 2 revolutions. The results below are from an approximate linkage of the apparitions (including perturbations) on the assumption of 10 revolutions.
