NOVAE IN M87
C. J. Pritchet, University of Victoria: and S. van den Bergh,
Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, report the discovery of two
ordinary novae in the Virgo-cluster galaxy M87. The observations
were made on five nights with a CCD detector at the prime focus of
the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope. The first nova, 53" east and
48" south of the nucleus, reached maximum B ~ 24.9 on or before
Feb. 24. The second nova, 43" east and 15" south of the nucleus,
reached B ~ 24.1 on or just after Feb. 28. The novae were above
the detection limit B = 25.5 on two and five nights, respectively.
