NOVA VULPECULAE 1984 No. 2
R. Lyons and C. T. Bolton, David Dunlop Observatory, communicate:
"A spectrogram (dispersion 0.8 nm/mm) obtained of this object
on Dec. 30.96 UT shows a spectrum typical of a nova shortly after
maximum light. The Balmer and Ca II lines are present in emission,
and a complex blend of Fe II and Ti II (?) emission is seen between
448 and 460 nm with weaker emission elsewhere in the spectrum. The
measured absorption line velocities are -630 km/s for Fe II and Ti
II, -670 km/s for H, and -720 km/s for Ca II. The latter two sets
of lines also had absorption components at -1390 km/s. The absorption
lines are relatively narrow, and there are very strong interstellar
Ca II lines at -7 km/s. A 1.2-nm/mm spectrogram obtained
on Jan. 8.97 shows only a slight weakening of the lower velocity
absorption components, but Fe II and Ti II lines have shifted to
-650 km/s, and the Balmer and Ca II lines are at -750 km/s."
E. A. Harlan and G. H. Herbig, Lick Observatory, write that a
75-A/mm spectrogram of the blue-violet region obtained on 1984 Dec.
28.1 UT shows a prominent pre-maximum absorption spectrum of type
F2, luminosity class I, together with moderately strong emission
bands of H and Fe II. The F2 spectrum and the absorption fringes
on the emission lines have a displacement of ~ 650 km/s. Another
set of absorption components at -1300 km/s is present at the Balmer
lines.
Further selected visual magnitude estimates: Jan. 11.04 UT,
6.5 (P. Maley, Houston, TX); 13.816, 6.5 (K. Medway, Southampton,
England).
SUPERNOVA (?) IN NGC 1023
F. Ciatti, Asiago Astrophysical Observatory, telexes that
observations made with the Schmidt telescope on Dec. 23 and Jan. 10
show no supernova in NGC 1023; a foreground star is very close to
the given position (cf. IAUC 4025).
