Schild, Center for Astrophysics, write: "We have made a prediscovery detection of SN 1986J in NGC 891 from CCD images obtained on 1983 Dec. 29 using the Whipple Observatory 0.61- m telescope. This detection predates the earliest detection of Rupen et al. (1987, A.J. 94, 61) by 7 days. Images were obtained in 3 filters which are broadened versions of the Thuan-Gunn gri bands. The seeing was 4" with variable overcast. The SN was detected in the r band and has a brightness about equal to that of another star 52" due west. It was only marginally seen in the i band and not at all at g. These observations are consistent with those of Rupen et al. for 1984 Jan. 6-7 and suggest that the spectrum was dominated by H-alpha emission at that time."
