COMET SHOEMAKER (1983p)
Carolyn Shoemaker reports that she has discovered a comet on
the 1983 RD prediscovery exposures with the 0.46-m Palomar
Schmidt. The object is diffuse and condensed with no apparent
tail. Her averaged measurements follow:

Spratt, Victoria, BC, 0.20-m reflector); 8.32, 9.9 (C. S. Morris,
Harvard, MA, 0.25-m reflector); 9.35, 9.7 (Bortle).

PERIODIC COMET IRAS (1983j)
Total visual magnitude estimates: Aug. 20.46 UT, 11.6 (C. E.
Spratt, Victoria, BC, 0.20-m reflector); Sept. 2.18, 12.1 (C. S.
Morris, Harvard, MA, 0.25-m reflector); 9.35, 11.3 (J. Bortle,
Stormville, NY, 0.32-m reflector; 3'5 tail in p.a. 230).

PERIODIC COMET TEMPEL 2 (1982d)
Total visual magnitude estimates: Aug. 13.36 UT, 10.2 (C. E.
Spratt, Victoria, BC, 0.20-m reflector); 16.33, 9.6 (J. E. Bortle,
Stormville, NY, 20 x 80 binoculars); 19.43, 11.0 (Spratt); 21.46,

reflector); 9.35, 10.3 (Bortle).

NOVALIKE VARIABLE IN LIBRA
     B. E. J. Pagel, Royal Greenwich Observatory; and M. M.
Phillips, Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory, report that a
low-dispersion SIT-vidicon spectrogram obtained on Sept. 1.0 UT
with the Cerro Tololo 1.5-m telescope showed strong H-gamma, H-beta and
H-alpha emission. The apparent visual continuum magnitude estimated
from this spectrum was 14.1 (cf. IAUC 3854, 3856).
